Before becoming an academic, he worked for a national construction contractor. He has lectured and published in the UK and abroad on various topics in the field of construction management, and is the Immediate Past Chairman of the Association of Researchers in Construction Management (ARCOM). He is a board member of Constructing Excellence (North East) and the Sustainable Cities Research Institute, and is Professeur Invité at the University of Artois, France.
